Cento
Olympic team champion in Sydney and World Cup winner with Otto Becker: Cento, also known as Dobel's Cento, was the most successful competitor among the sons of Capitol I. Here you will find his profile and every horse from our breeding that carries Cento blood.
Pedigree
Cento was bred in 1989 by Heinrich Schoof. He is by Capitol I out of Viola XI by Caletto II and comes from Holsteiner damline 2137, a family with a show jumping tradition: his great-granddam Legende won the Grand Prix of Rome in 1960 with Reiner Hedde. As a young stallion he won the World Championship for breeding stallions in France with Otto Becker.
A career at the top
With Otto Becker, Cento formed one of the most successful partnerships in show jumping for over a decade:
- 2000: team gold at the Sydney Olympics, fourth individually, winner of the Aachen Grand Prix
- 2002: winner of the World Cup Final in Leipzig
- 2003: team European champion
- 2004: team bronze at the Athens Olympics, winner of the Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows (Calgary)
In total he won more than one million euros. In 2006 he was retired from the sport in front of 50,000 spectators at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen. Cento died in February 2018 at the age of 28.
Cento as a sire
Cento was approved for breeding by Oldenburg, the Rhineland studbook and the BWP, among others. His best offspring include Cella (out of a Chin Chin mare), with whom Ben Maher won in Aachen, London and Wellington, and Cantinero (out of a Cash mare), with whom Henrik von Eckermann won the Grand Prix of Rome in 2015. According to Hippomundo he sired 42 horses competing at 1.60 m level. Otto Becker says his offspring need a little more time but last longer in the sport, and that Cento suits mares with blood best.
